Foliage, flowers, comfortable seating, sunlight and even water features all help. And, to help you get started in how to use some of them together in your garden or backyard, here are some of my favorite relaxing garden ideas.
Relaxing Garden Ideas
Mini French Garden
This takes just a bit of French gardens and brings it into your home. It’s a very relaxing space where you have a corner or little area where you can sit back and enjoy being one with nature.
It is perfect for small spaces and if you want to maximize your garden space.
Notice that the area for sitting and entertaining is not big. Instead, it is very simple. And, most of the area of used for the plants.
Small Backyard Garden
If you have a small backyard garden and want to as much of the floor space as you can, you can do this instead.
Notice that or most of the plant life is not in the ground. Instead you only have containers places on the edges. This leaves the entire are clear to make the space look bigger.
On the other hand, most of the plants are either climbing vines on wall or some kind of structure or trees.
This doesn’t diminish the presence of nature. At the same time, it maximizes the small backyard.

Wooden Swing Sofa
There’s nothing more relaxing than being able to sit under a shaded are and just rock back of forth gently on a lazy afternoon.
And, this beautiful bench swing will let you do that with your special someone or on your own it you just want some time off.
I love how the swing incorporates a pergola-like support that allows plant life to grow around it as well.
Soothing Water Fountain
Water fountains and other water features are always a great addition because the sound of gentle water is very relaxing. It reminds us of being in the outdoors withing nature.
And, you can recreate that same feeling in your backyard or garden. You can do so by creating a simple water feature. You can even set one up your yourself.
In this case, the water bowl fountain is surrounding by low lying plants.
Relaxing Sofa
Setting up a sofa in your backyard is an amazing idea. In fact, you’ll see a few of them in this list of relaxing garden ideas.
This gives you somewhere to just sit back and relax.
To get the most effect, surround the sofa with some plats. This one uses a few small flowers and neatly trimmed spherical bushes.
In the back it also has some small, sparse trees which make for the perfect calming environment.
Calming Rock Waterfall
This is another lovely rendition of a water feature. It is perfect if you want something unique and eye catching.
The beautiful rock step formation doubles as a mini-waterfall where there’s circulating water making some soothing sounds that will help you get away from the world.
I love how different rocks are use to create texture and character. But, you can decide what material and how to place them around the waterfall structure to match your garden’s design.
Surrounded by Flowers
In addition to water, another way to create a soothing environment is to grow flowers around your garden.
This design uses a small part of a corner and fills it with beautiful shrubs, vines, a tree and flowers.
Together this makes you get away from the city and to somewhere like a botanical garden where you can just relax.
Hammock in the Garden
Hammocks are another wonderful way to enjoy and relax in the outdoors. You do need to be a bit more careful with them because of their instability.
This is also why it is important to keep very young kids from them.
But, what’s great about hammocks is that they’re easy to set up and don’t need a lot of space. You do want to place it under some kind of shade so the afternoon sun doesn’t become a nuisance as you rest.
Garden Swinging Seats
This is another variation of the garden swing above. But, this time you have individual seating. This also gives you a lot more space around you since the plants don’t surround you.
Instead, they are in the ground and some distance away.
Relaxing Backyard Garden with Sofa
This is another version of the garden sofa where you keep plants on the side and overhead to maximize the space for yourself and your guests.
Once again it uses gravel as the main surface to save on having to keep maintaining the grass. It also lets your dogs and kids run around without worrying about the turf getting damaged over time.
What makes it work are the plants the cover the walls as well the dense foliage that fill up most of the background.
Italian Countryside
This is another European recreation. This time from the Italian countryside.
This simple, yet lovely looks sets up a bench where you can sit with pillows on a cushion under the shade or some plants overhead.
The lovely bushes and vines are a perfect backdrop while the lawn or grassy garden lets you just relax.
Corner Oasis
This is another amazing looking option that works very well if you have a small garden.
To take up the least amount of space possible, you can set up a cozy seating corner where you can have breakfast, tea or just read a book. This lets you get a lovely full panoramic view of your entire garden while you’re at it.
Relaxing Garden Seating Area
This is the perfect garden if you don’t have a lot of space.
You can use a small section that’s enough to seat one or two people. Then, add a cushion and pillows to make it comfortable.
To make space for plants, you can add a shelf or small areas
Zen Garden
If you prefer a relaxing garden with fewer plants, this minimalistic design is perfect. It’s focal point is the large bonsai in the back along with the small water feature.
Of course, it is important to have some king of seating. After all, nobody can relax is they’re standing up all the time.
