DIY trellis ideas are great if you have some kind of vertical structure in your patio, yard or garden. In most cases, gardeners use them to help support climbing vines and plants.

Since the trellis provides the structure to which the vines adhere to, how to design or shape the structure determines how everything looks in the end.

This is why you’ll see tons of amazing and elaborate trellis ideas around.

Fancy Trellis

This is an unconventional yet amazing trellis idea that will surely attract attention. It works both indoors and outdoors are you can create a subtle trellis design of your choice against the wall.

This will allow climbers to grab hold of the of the pieces at the bottom and make their way up until they cover part or all of the wall.

This is simple as well to create as all you need are a few pieces of wood. Ideally, they’re of the same width and thickness. Then, you can just vary the length.

Recycled Glass Door Trellis

Do you have any windows or door frames you don’t need anymore? If you do, don’t throw them away.

They’re perfectly designed for this trellis idea. Because of the holes they have for glass, vines can cling on to them and slowly climb up to cover them.

Tall Corner Trellis

This is another decorative piece. It is first and foremost a planter stand. But, the trellis in the back provides a support structure that will allow the plant to grow upwards.

All you need are a few pieces of wood which you put together. Then add a base to hold the container plant.

Again, the design of the trellis will be us to you.

So, you can make it more intricate if you want.

Trellis with Wall Lamps

For the outdoors, this is a larger, more elaborate trellis idea project. It also comes with custom lamp holders that will add some lovely accents to the piece.

This is perfect o lay against a wall or leave as a standalone. The design is very similar to the previous in that you create cross-hatches. But, the size will mean you’ll need to measure everything out a bit more.

Arch Trellis

I’ve always avoided creating arches are similar designs because I have difficulty creating the curves on top. But, if you’re better at it, you might enjoy create this trellis idea.

This uses a combination of four arch trellises.

But, you can just make one or two and what will be amazing as well.

Wood and Wire Trellis

From the more complicated, we move onto to something simpler. This is build from 3 large pieces of cut wood. You want to cut thicker slabs to create a sold structure.

Then adding some wire going down will allow the plants to climb up the structure.

DIY Vegetable Trellis

Here’s a simple vegetable trellis created from a few pieces of wood and strings. You don’t need something as heavy since the vegetables don’t put as much weight as the heavier vines to.

This is why you’ll see flower and vine trellises are built much bigger than those for vegetables.

Cucumber Trellis

This trellis idea is perfect for growing climbing vegetables. All you need here are a few bamboo poles and strings.

Placing them together in a triangular shape allows you them to climb towards one another.

Bamboo is great to use because it is thin and light. Most importantly, it is very strong and sturdy.

Slim Cylindrical Trellis

You can create a metal, wood or wire version of this, depending on what you’re skilled at fabricating.

This is a lovely tunnel trellis that allows a more compact growth.

The result is more flowers near one another for a flowering vine.

Wooden Matrix Trellis

A lovely combination of art and functionality. I love this matrix trellis idea because it instantly draws the eye.

Place, if you choose the right flowering vine to train on it, you’ll have something amazing once its starts filling out.

Again, all you need are a few pieces long pieces of wood. But, you’ll need to create your design because each piece of wood will need to be measured.

Wooden Lattice Trellis

This is a larger project you can undertake if you want to cover a whole side of your home or a high wall.

It takes a little bit more work because you’ll need two or three people to hold the woodies pieces straight as you place them together.

Crisscross Plant Climber

This is another simple designs that’s lovely to look at once the vines take hold and fill it in. Using a combination of thin pieces of wood you can create diagonally crosses to form your pattern.

This trellis idea is very versatile as you can position it depending on what kind of climbing plant you want to use. If its likes shade, you can place it against your home. If it likes full sun, keeping it against a sunny wall or fence will work great.

Honeycomb Trellis

If you want to add an attention grabbing decoration to your garden, this trellis ideas will do just that. It create a lovely look with the combination of hexagons connected to one another to create a beehive pattern.

You can create this design by suing pieces of wood, cutting them and forming the hexagons. Once you have one, you can replicate the same measurements as the original one.
