DIY garden markers are amazingly useful since they make it easy to know where one group of plants are. While they’re not necessary if you have a container garden (albeit helpful), they work really well in the backyard especially for plants that look very similar to one another. This is why you’ll often see herbs labeled.
The best part about these markers is they give you a free hand to show off your personality. You get to decide what kind of markers or labels to use, the size, shape, style and even color.
This makes them exciting since you can create something totally eye catching.

These lovely garden markers are very easy to make. In fact you can create them within a few hours once you already have all the tools ready.
Make sure to have markers or labels so you can create that names on the markers. The markers themselves are constructed from plastic and you’ll need to piece them together as well.
Stick & Coffee Cup Cover Garden Markers
Among the different ideas in our DIY garden markers list, this is the easiest of all. And, they’re practically free.
You do need a few skewer sticks. You can use old ones that you’ve used and just wash and dry them before using for this project.
Likewise, you’ll need to collect coffee cup lids. Depending n how many of your are coffee drinkers in the house, this can take a few days to a couple of weeks.

Here’s one of my all-time DIY garden marker ideas It’s simple to make and they’re amazing to look at.
The most beautiful part of the these plant markers are the signs inside the ball.
So, do take the time to make the letterings and add colorful images to them. You can find a few good fonts and illustrations online to use.
Wine Cork Markers
If you’re like us, you can easily collect a few wine bottles and corks. Instead of throwing them away, why not reuse them in your backyard.
Wine bottles can be used in many ways including garden borders as well as lighting just to name a few. And, you can use the corks to create these simple but lovely markers.
Wooden Plant Markers
I love these DIY garden markers because they remind me of what my mom used in her garden when I was growing up. She’s since changed them. But, I can’t help but feel the nostalgia.
In any case, the best part about these markers is that they’re ridiculously easy to make once you have all the materials ready.
The wooden pieces are the more challenging things to get. Not because they’re hard to find. But, you want to pick the texture, color and look of the wood that suits your preference.
Once you have that, all it takes it writing the labels down. Do practice writing them before the actual thing. You don’t want to misspell or regret how they look later on.
Old Spoon DIY Garden Markers
Old spoons are perfect as DIY garden markers because their shapes lend themselves very well for this purpose. In fact, the larger the head of the spoon, the more space you’ll have to place the labels.
You can paint the top part of the spoon different colors to make it easy to read. In this case it is black. But, you can pick your favorite color. White is an easy background to use as well.
Painted River Rock Garden Markers
If you have a lot of large rocks in your garden, why not use them.
These not only make amazing plant markers but are also a fun DIY garden project you can do with the kids. All they need are some chalk or markers that contrast the colors of the rocks and you can get to work.
Spade Garden Markers
If you have mini-spades lying around or want to craft some out from small wooden pieces, this is a fun and beautiful marker idea to create.
In this case, the spade labels are colored to match the plants. But, you can use complementary or contrasting colors as well.
Wooden Flag Plant Markers
These mini flag markers are another awesome option if you’re looking for no-frills but useful plant labels.
You can create them using some small pieces of wood and sticks or twigs. You do want to make them a bit uniform to easily spot them amongst the plants.
But, it’s not necessary as you can just as easily make them different sizes or colors to distinguish one flag marker from the others.
Painted Sticks Pot Markers
These painted sticks are one of the easier garden marker ideas to make. You can use any kind of sticks as long as they’re wide enough for you to read the text on them and tall enough so they stand out to be seen.
You can even use popsicle sticks if you want. Or, glue a couple together to make a bigger stick.
Coloring the sticks are a great idea so you can instantly tell them apart from afar.
Ceramic Plant Markers
In case you’re looking for something more adorable or cut, why not try these. These take a little more work since you do need to go out and find the shape and style you want to use.
Then, there’s the hook stands which can be created from any kind of thin metal pieces.
Once you have the ceramic pieces, it is time to paint over them and create various colorful designs for the labels.
