12 Creative DIY Garden Decorations from Old Drawers

DIY garden decorations from old drawers are great way to add some rustic elegance to your backyard. While some old furniture are complete junk, broken down and downright unusable, drawers are often left in pristine condition because they’re kept under the protection of the desk or cabinet.

Their size and storage space also make them perfect for placing plants whether you want to keep them in containers or add soil in yourself.

Here are some of my favorite ways to use old drawers as DIY garden decorations.

DIY Garden Decorations from Old Drawers

3 Level Drawer Flower Container

This is a unique look thanks to the way the drawers are stacked up. It also allows you to keep flowers in the spaces within the drawers.

This makes is very versatile in that you can easily move it when needed. And, you plant grow different plants in it as well.

Hanging Drawer Planters

If you have slide out drawers that are not being used anymore, you can take use them as vertical planters or hang them up against a wall or fence.

In most cases, the drawers will be longer and you’ll need to cut its depth to keep them from protruding too far out from the wall.

Finally, you can paint them as well to whatever colors you want to show off your personality.

Hanging Window Frame Flower Box

Here is another version of a hanging planter. But this time you have an entire window frame and drawer attached to it.

This makes it look like a window box similar to those outside houses, although the drawer is not as deep as some window boxes.

Because of this, make sure to use plants that don’t need a lot of room for their roots to grow.

Color File Cabinet Drawers

If you have an old filing cabinet that’s not being used anymore, you can create this creatively color garden decoration with it.

Unlike many desk drawers, this gives you a lot of depth. Sometimes, too much depth. If that’s the case, you can add something below to prop up the container or soil that’s inside the drawers.

Alternatively, it also gives you the chance to grow larger plants or plants that need more room for their roots to burrow down into the ground.

Box Planters

Next on our list of DIY garden decorations from old drawers is a look that’s perfect for small pull out drawers. These are the ones you see in some desks or jewelry cabinet.

Unlike many of the others in in our list, these drawers have much more limited space. As such, each will only house one plant at most.

Because of that, keeping the drawers by themselves may look a little blank. To make them look better, stack them up over one another like in the photo to improve volume.

Indoor Tabletop Herb Planter Box

I love wooden furniture because they have a timeless look to them. And, this is one example.

If you have a smaller, narrower wooden drawer that is can sit in the middle of a table without overwhelming that space, then you can grow herbs in it.

This is perfect for kitchen countertops as well where you can just pick off the herbs when you want to sue them for cooking.

Vintage Cabinet Table Planter

When it comes to cabinets and drawers, those with more decorative looks are easier to incorporate into your garden.

That’s because plants and nature in general are full of character and aren’t uniform. As such, this makes pieces with decorations fit in easier.

In contrast, flat, square or rectangular objects often need rearranging or coloring to make them blend in.

Old Cabinet Drawer Pot Holder

This garden decoration from an old drawer makes use of the larger wider desks and furniture. You can likewise use those that slide from under the bed for this.

It would really helped if they had wheels or some kind of legs so that the drawer won’t just rest flatly on the ground.

This is a much easier setup to use since it gives you a lot of space. As such, you can use the entire drawer as a raised garden bed. Or, hold multiple containers in it.

Old Drawer Pile-Up

Another option you can try is you have 2 or 3 old drawers is to pile them up in a lovely way like in the photo. You want to give it a balance between the space so there’s enough room to place the plants in.

At the same time, organize them in such way that they look beautiful together.

Depending on the kind of look you’re going for and the color the plants you want to keep there, you can also re-paint the drawers.

Drawer Box Planters

In most cases, the drawers you’ll have available will be of similar sizes. That’s because they’ll come from the same cabinet, armoire or desk.

But, if you happen to have old drawers of different sizes, you can do this with them. Here, you can use their contrasting sizes in your favor. If the boxes come in different colors, they’ll even look more lively together.

This works with nature because there isn’t a lot of uniformity in nature. And, that’s what makes it beautiful.

Tall Box Planter

Here’s something different because of the height of the drawer. It is unique in that instead of using the other drawers, you just stack them together to form a new garden decoration from it.

If you’re looking for a taller stand or platform for your plants but don’t have a space that’s naturally bult for it, this is something you can try.

Cascading Drawer Flower Bed

If you have an entire cabinet, this is a great way to use its drawers together. Taking advantage of the shape and form of the furniture lets you become more creative with how you organize them plants.

And, it lets you decide what plants to grow and in what order.
